It Ain't 4th of July Til a Williams wins Wimbledon

I move that we give Venus and Serena Williams honorary British citizenship based on their Wimbledon dominance. If not, consider their wins an Independence Day tradition of reminding the British that we beat them to be free.

With Serena smoking "Whatshernamerava" (word to Mojo Hoops for that one) in 67 minutes (!!!), it makes it the 9th time in 11 years a Williams sister has won at the All-England's Club. It's Serena's 13th Grand Slam - 1 ahead of Billie Jean King for 6th all time.

There's no question that Serena is the Player of the 2000's in women's tennis (peep her resume). And there's no debate that Serena and Venus are two of the greatest female players and doubles teams ever, something I wrote about two years ago when they won their doubles Olympic gold at Beijing.

Look at what they've done since 2000. Now look at their recent history. Serena's won at least two majors the last two seasons. They won five of the last six Grand Slam doubles champions before Wimbledon. Serena's entering her 36th week as the No. 1 ranked player, Venus is ranked No. 2 and the two are ranked as the No. 1 doubles team in the world.

Not bad for a 30 year old and a 28 year old - ages when tennis players are supposed to be past their prime.

Every time they win, it makes their father Richard look like a genius for his big mouth and spearheading their career better than almost any parent of an athlete. And it makes them looks like geniuses for taking time away from tennis to invest their lives in other avenues such as fashion and team ownership.

Richard Williams said Serena would be the better of the two even when Venus was the first to reach a Grand Slam Final. He's proven to be a prophet when Serena was the first to win a Grand Slam. He's been abrasive but notice how Venus and Serena have pretty much avoided drama away from the court, Serena's temper aside.

They outlasted the best from their era (Hingis, Davenport and Capriati) and they're beating the best of this era (Henin, Clijsters, Sharapova). All while showing a tennis audience that two Black girls from Compton could make an impact in a sport not seen since Arthur Ashe/Althea Gibson in their primes.

It's 4th of July and there's few things better than seeing the Williams sisters rep their country after a Wimbledon final. Given this country's history toward people of color, it's a glorious sight and gives sports fans a chance to recognize the sisters as two of the best women to ever swing a racket.

  1. A-Men Virgo!
Serena is my girl & Venus is my queen. I'm so happy for them & proud of their success.
You're right about their Wimbledon dominance & regular place on 4th of July weekend.
Wish we'd have had them win another doubles, but there will undoubtedly be more of those.
    Thanx for the shoutout!
